Learning Guitar with a tutor

Guitar is the instrument people most often try to teach themselves, and the one where a teacher saves the most time. A tutor spots the habits that hold self-taught players back, like a tense fretting hand or a strumming arm that never relaxes, and gives you a clear order in which to learn chords, rhythm and songs.

Educify guitar tutors teach acoustic, electric and classical guitar one to one, online or in person, to children from about age seven and to adults of any age.

What guitar lessons cover

  • Open chords and changing between them smoothly
  • Strumming and picking patterns, and keeping steady time
  • Barre chords and power chords
  • Reading tab, chord charts and standard notation
  • Scales, riffs and lead playing, from the pentatonic scale up
  • Fingerstyle and classical technique
  • Improvising, songwriting and playing with other musicians
  • Tuning, changing strings and caring for your guitar

Acoustic, electric or classical?

Acoustic steel-string guitar is the usual choice for singer-songwriters and strummed styles. Electric guitar has lighter strings that are easier on new fingers, and suits rock, blues, funk and metal. Classical guitar has nylon strings and a wider neck, and is used for classical and flamenco music; smaller classical guitars are often the best fit for young children.

Most skills carry from one to another, and your tutor can help you choose the right guitar and size before you buy.

From first song to advanced playing

  • Beginners: a handful of chords and your first full songs within the first weeks of regular practice.
  • Intermediate players: barre chords, cleaner timing, lead playing and a wider range of styles.
  • Advanced players: theory on the fretboard, improvisation, arranging, recording, and preparing for auditions or performances.
  • Exams: The Royal Conservatory of Music has a graded program for classical guitar, for students who want structured levels and exams.

Online and in-person guitar lessons

For online lessons, set up a laptop or phone so it shows both hands. Electric players can play through a small amp next to the device. A tuner app and a capo are worth having.

In-person lessons take place at your home, a library or the tutor's studio, wherever a tutor near you offers them.

Guitar lessons: common questions

How long does it take to learn guitar?

Most beginners who practise 15 to 20 minutes a day can play simple songs with a few open chords within a month or two. Barre chords and quick, clean chord changes usually take several months. A tutor keeps that progress steady and stops bad habits from setting in.

What kind of guitar should a child start on?

The right size matters more than the type. Children under about ten usually start on a half or three-quarter size classical guitar with soft nylon strings. Older children can start on a full-size acoustic or electric.

Do I need to read music to learn guitar?

No. Most popular guitar music is written as tab and chord charts, which you can learn in a lesson or two. Standard notation is taught too, and it is essential for classical guitar.

Can left-handed players take lessons?

Yes. Left-handed players can learn on a left-handed guitar or on a standard one. Tell your tutor and they will adapt their demonstrations.

My fingertips hurt. Is that normal?

Yes, for the first few weeks. Short, frequent practice lets calluses build without blisters, and a tutor can check that the strings are not set too high, which makes playing harder than it needs to be.
