Learning Algebra with a tutor

Algebra is where math starts using letters for numbers, and for many students it is where math stops making sense. It does not have to: algebra is a small set of rules applied consistently, and a tutor who shows why each step works makes the rest of high-school math much easier.

Educify algebra tutors help students from pre-algebra in middle school through high-school courses and university entrance tests, online or in person.

Algebra topics we teach

  • Variables, expressions and the order of operations
  • Solving linear equations and inequalities
  • Graphing lines: slope, intercepts and equations of a line
  • Systems of equations
  • Exponents and radicals
  • Polynomials: multiplying and factoring
  • Quadratic equations and functions
  • Rational expressions
  • Functions and function notation
  • Exponential and logarithmic functions
  • Word problems: turning a sentence into an equation

Algebra in Canadian high schools

In Alberta, algebra runs through the university-bound math sequence: Math 10C covers linear relations, systems of equations, exponents and polynomials; Math 20-1 adds quadratics, radicals and rational expressions; and Math 30-1 covers functions, including logarithmic, polynomial and rational functions. Other provinces cover the same ground in different courses, and tutors follow the one your child is taking.

Where students get stuck

Most algebra trouble comes from a handful of places: negative signs, distributing and combining like terms, fractions inside equations, factoring, and word problems. A tutor watches a student work, finds which of these is causing the mistakes, and practises it until it is reliable.

Algebra for the SAT and ACT

Algebra and advanced math make up most of the SAT Math section, and algebra runs through the ACT math test too. Tutors can review the topics, practise in the format of the test, and work on speed and accuracy.

Algebra lessons: common questions

What is the difference between pre-algebra and algebra?

Pre-algebra builds the foundations: negative numbers, fractions, ratios, simple equations and the idea of a variable. Algebra uses them to solve equations, work with polynomials and graph relationships between quantities.

My child understands algebra in class but does badly on tests. Why?

Usually it is small, repeated errors, such as dropped negative signs or skipped steps, or not enough practice to work without help. A tutor finds the pattern and builds the habits that fix it.

Can adults learn algebra?

Yes. Adults return to algebra for upgrading courses, college or university entrance, trades exams and career changes. Lessons start from where you are now.

How long does it take to get better at algebra?

Students who have fallen behind often feel the difference within a few weeks of regular sessions, once the missing basics are back in place.
