Learning Piano with a tutor

Piano is one of the best first instruments: every note is laid out in front of you, so reading music, rhythm and harmony make sense as you play them. A good teacher turns that into steady progress, from your first five-finger pieces to the music you have always wanted to play.

Educify piano tutors teach one to one, online or in person, and shape every lesson around the student: a six-year-old starting out, a teenager working toward a Royal Conservatory of Music exam, or an adult coming back to the keyboard after years away.

What piano lessons cover

  • Posture, hand position and finger technique, so playing stays relaxed and comfortable
  • Reading music in the treble and bass clefs, counting and rhythm
  • Scales, chords and arpeggios, built up one key at a time
  • Pieces chosen for the student: classical, pop, film, jazz and worship music
  • Sight-reading and ear training
  • Music theory, from note names to harmony and chord progressions
  • Playing by ear, improvising and accompanying singers, for students who want to

Lessons for every level

  • Young beginners (about ages 5 to 8): short, playful lessons that build note reading, rhythm and finger independence, with parents kept up to date on practice.
  • Older beginners and adults: a quicker start, with pieces you recognise early so practice stays rewarding.
  • Intermediate players: wider repertoire, pedalling, dynamics and phrasing, and the technique to play pieces cleanly at full tempo.
  • Advanced students: polishing performance pieces, preparing for auditions, festivals and competitions, and the theory and history behind the music.

RCM piano exams and other goals

Many Canadian piano students follow The Royal Conservatory of Music (RCM) Certificate Program. It runs from the Preparatory levels through Levels 1 to 10 to the ARCT diploma, and theory exams join in at the higher levels. A practical exam covers repertoire, études, technical requirements, ear tests and sight-reading.

Your tutor can plan the year around an exam session, or around a recital, a music festival, a school audition, or simply playing for yourself and the people you love.

Online and in-person piano lessons

Online lessons work with an acoustic piano or a full-size digital piano. A laptop, tablet or phone placed to the side, showing your hands and the keys, is all you need, and your tutor can see your technique and hear your playing.

In-person lessons take place at your home, a library or the tutor's studio, wherever a tutor near you offers them.

Piano lessons: common questions

What age can my child start piano lessons?

Most children are ready between five and seven, once they can focus for 20 to 30 minutes and know their numbers and letters. There is no upper age limit: adults often progress quickly because they practise with a clear purpose.

Do I need a real piano?

Not at first. A digital piano with 88 weighted keys and a sustain pedal is enough for years of lessons. A smaller keyboard without weighted keys is fine for the first few months, but it makes it harder to learn to control how loudly or softly you play.

How long are lessons, and how much should I practise?

Lesson length is agreed with your tutor: 30 minutes often suits young beginners, and 45 to 60 minutes suits older students and anyone preparing for an exam. Short practice on most days does more than one long session a week.

Can a tutor prepare my child for RCM piano exams?

Yes. Mention the level and the exam session you are aiming for when you request your free assessment, and we will look for a tutor who teaches the RCM syllabus. They will plan the repertoire, technique, ear training and sight-reading the exam asks for.

I played as a child. Can I pick it up again as an adult?

Yes, and faster than starting from nothing. Your tutor will find where your reading and technique are now and choose music that rebuilds them without going back to the very first book.
