Learning Calculus with a tutor

Calculus is the mathematics of change: how fast something moves, grows or cools, and how many small changes add up to a total. It opens the way to engineering, physics, economics and the sciences, and it rewards solid algebra and a clear explanation of the ideas behind the rules.

Educify calculus tutors help high-school and university students, online or in person, with coursework, problem sets and exam preparation.

Calculus topics we teach

  • Limits and continuity
  • Derivatives: the definition, and the power, product, quotient and chain rules
  • Implicit differentiation and related rates
  • Curve sketching and optimisation
  • Antiderivatives, Riemann sums and the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus
  • Integration techniques: substitution, integration by parts and partial fractions
  • Applications: area, volume, motion and growth
  • Sequences and series

High-school calculus: Math 31, AP and IB

In Alberta, Math 31 introduces limits, derivatives and integrals, and many engineering and science programs require or recommend it. AP Calculus AB covers differential and integral calculus, and AP Calculus BC adds series and parametric and polar functions. IB Mathematics: Analysis and Approaches also includes calculus.

A tutor can teach ahead of the class, review before tests, and work through past exam questions with your student.

University calculus

First-year calculus moves quickly, with weekly assignments and heavy midterms. Tutors help with problem sets, explain lecture material that went by too fast, and prepare students for exams, without doing graded work for them.

Why calculus feels hard, and how tutoring helps

Most students who struggle with calculus are really struggling with algebra or trigonometry underneath it. A tutor finds those gaps quickly, fixes them, and then shows what each calculus rule means, so it can be used rather than memorised.

Calculus lessons: common questions

Should my child take Math 31?

If they are aiming for engineering, sciences or some business programs, check the admission requirements of the universities they are considering: many require or recommend it. Strong Math 30-1 skills are the best preparation.

Do I need to be good at algebra before learning calculus?

It helps a great deal. Calculus problems are mostly algebra once the calculus step is done. A tutor can strengthen algebra and trigonometry alongside the calculus.

Can you help with university calculus?

Yes. Tutors help with first and second-year calculus courses, from understanding lectures to preparing for midterms and finals.

How should I prepare for the AP Calculus exam?

Finish the course content early, then practise past free-response questions under timed conditions. A tutor can review your answers the way the exam is scored and focus on what costs you marks.
