Math builds on itself. A gap in fractions in Grade 5 becomes trouble with algebra in Grade 8 and with functions in high school, which is why so many students find that math suddenly gets hard. One-to-one tutoring finds where understanding stopped and rebuilds from there, at the student's pace.
Educify math tutors work with students from early elementary through Grade 12 and into university, online or in person: homework support, catching up, getting ahead, and preparing for tests and exams.
Grades 1 to 3: counting, place value, addition and subtraction strategies, early multiplication, and confidence with numbers.
Grades 4 to 6: multiplication and division, fractions and decimals, area and perimeter, and the number sense that later algebra depends on.
Grades 7 to 9: integers, ratios, linear equations, the Pythagorean theorem and polynomials, the bridge to high-school math.
Grades 10 to 12: the high-school sequences. In Alberta that means Math 10C, 20-1 and 30-1 for students heading to university, with Math 31 for calculus, or the -2 and -3 sequences. Tutors follow whichever course your child is taking, in any province.
Alberta students write Provincial Achievement Tests in math in Grade 6 and Grade 9, and a diploma exam in Math 30-1 or Math 30-2 in Grade 12 that counts toward the final course mark. Other provinces have their own, such as Ontario's EQAO Grade 9 math assessment and British Columbia's Graduation Numeracy Assessment.
A tutor can work through past papers with your child, explain the question styles, and build the habit of checking answers under time pressure.
Falling marks, homework that takes far longer than it should, avoiding math, or saying they understood it in class but cannot do it at home are all common signs. So is a strong student who is ready to go further than the class.
Tutors work from what your child is studying in class. Share the textbook, worksheets or course outline and lessons follow it, whether that is the Alberta program of studies or another province's or country's curriculum.
Once or twice a week suits most students. Before a big exam, a few weeks of more frequent sessions can help.
Yes, and homework is a good place to start. A good tutor goes further than tonight's answers, making sure your child understands the method well enough to manage the next assignment alone.
