What Is a Good PSAT Score in 2026? By Grade, Plus When Scores Come Out

The PSAT/NMSQT is more than SAT practice. It gives an early read on college-readiness skills, shows where to focus SAT prep, and is the National Merit qualifying test for 11th graders.
So, what is a good PSAT score? It depends on your grade, your goals, and whether you are aiming for National Merit. This guide covers the PSAT score range, what counts as good in 10th and 11th grade using College Board's own percentile data, whether 1200 is strong, and when PSAT scores come out in 2026.
Key Numbers
- 320–1520: PSAT/NMSQT total score range. Each section (Reading and Writing, Math) is scored 160–760.
- October 1–30, 2026: PSAT/NMSQT testing window, with an optional Saturday date of October 17.
- October 22, November 5 or November 12, 2026: student score release dates, depending on when your school submits the tests.
- 208: the national Commended Student cutoff for the most recent National Merit class (2027), per NMSC.
Understanding the PSAT Score Range
The Digital PSAT/NMSQT has a total score range of 320 to 1520, made up of two sections:
| Section | Score Range |
|---|---|
| Reading and Writing | 160–760 |
| Math | 160–760 |
| Total PSAT/NMSQT score | 320–1520 |
Your total is the sum of the two section scores: 620 in Reading and Writing plus 640 in Math gives 1260. The PSAT shares the SAT Suite's score scale, but the SAT runs from 400 to 1600, so the PSAT tops out lower. See College Board's Understanding Scores page for the official breakdown.
A percentile is the percentage of students in a comparison group who scored at or below you. College Board publishes two kinds: nationally representative (weighted to represent all U.S. students in that grade) and user group (students who actually took the test in the past three school years).
What Is a Good PSAT Score by Grade Level?
Because juniors have had another year of school, the same score usually lands at a lower percentile in 11th grade. The table below uses College Board's published PSAT/NMSQT percentile tables to show where common total scores fall.
| Total score | 10th grade: national | 10th grade: test takers | 11th grade: national | 11th grade: test takers |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 900 | 46th | 51st | 37th | 36th |
| 1000 | 65th | 69th | 59th | 53rd |
| 1100 | 82nd | 82nd | 79th | 69th |
| 1200 | 92nd | 92nd | 90th | 82nd |
| 1300 | 97th | 97th | 96th | 91st |
| 1400 | 99th | 99th | 99th | 96th |

Reading the same table the other way, here is roughly where the middle and top of each group sits:
- 10th grade: about 920 is the 50th percentile nationally, about 1050 is the 75th, and about 1170 is the 90th.
- 11th grade: about 960 is the 50th percentile nationally, about 1080 is the 75th, and about 1200 is the 90th. Among juniors who actually took the test, the 50th percentile is about 980 and the 90th is about 1280.
College Board also sets grade-level benchmarks for each section. Meeting them means a student is on track for college and career readiness:
| Grade | Reading and Writing | Math |
|---|---|---|
| 10th grade | 430 | 480 |
| 11th grade | 460 | 510 |

Good PSAT Score for a 10th Grader
A good PSAT score for a 10th grader meets both section benchmarks and sits above the national middle. Around 1050 is roughly the 75th percentile nationally, and 1170 or higher is in the top 10%.
At this stage the PSAT is diagnostic. Look at which section is stronger, which question types cost you points, and where the gaps are in algebra, grammar, reading or data analysis. A lower sophomore score does not limit your college options; it shows you what to work on while there is plenty of time.
Good PSAT Score for an 11th Grader
A good PSAT score for an 11th grader, sometimes called a good PSAT score for a junior, depends more on college goals and scholarship ambitions.
A junior near 960 is around the national middle, and 1200 reaches about the 90th percentile nationally (82nd among juniors who took the test). Students aiming for highly selective colleges should treat the junior PSAT as a starting point for a higher SAT target. Juniors' scores can also count toward National Merit, which uses the Selection Index rather than the total.
Is 1200 a Good PSAT Score?
Yes, 1200 is a good PSAT score for both grades.
For a 10th grader, 1200 is at the 92nd percentile in both of College Board's comparison groups, so it is an excellent starting point for SAT preparation.
For an 11th grader, 1200 is at the 90th percentile nationally and the 82nd among juniors who took the test. It shows solid preparation for many colleges, but it is a baseline to build on for highly selective schools and well below recent National Merit levels. A 1200 PSAT also doesn't guarantee a 1200 SAT; students keep learning between tests, and scores vary from one sitting to the next.

PSAT Scores and National Merit Qualification
National Merit Scholarship Corporation (NMSC) uses the PSAT/NMSQT taken in 11th grade to screen entrants. Sophomores on a normal four-year path aren't entered; they need to take it again as juniors.
Who is eligible? Students attending high school in the U.S., D.C. or U.S. territories can enter. Students at high schools outside the U.S., including Canada, must be U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents (or have applied) who intend to become citizens. A Canadian student without either status can take the PSAT for practice but isn't eligible for National Merit. See NMSC's entry requirements for the details.
National Merit does not use your total score. It uses the Selection Index, which ranges from 48 to 228:
Selection Index = (2 × Reading and Writing + Math) ÷ 10
For example, a student with 700 in Reading and Writing and 680 in Math has:
(2 × 700 + 680) ÷ 10 = 208
Because Reading and Writing counts double, the split matters: the same 1380 total with the scores reversed gives 206.
Cutoffs change every year. According to NMSC's Guide to the National Merit Scholarship Program (September 2026), for the class of 2027 (students who took the PSAT/NMSQT in October 2025):
- The national Commended Student cutoff was a Selection Index of 208.
- Semifinalist cutoffs are set state by state and ranged from 208 (for example, Alaska and Wyoming) to 223 (New Jersey).
Cutoffs for students testing this October won't be known until next fall, so treat these as a guide, not a target. If you're aiming for National Merit, compare your Selection Index with your state's most recent cutoff, confirm your eligibility with NMSC, and keep preparing for the SAT either way.
When Do PSAT Scores Come Out in 2026?
Schools give the 2026 PSAT/NMSQT during the testing window of October 1–30, 2026, and may also offer it on Saturday, October 17, 2026.
Your release date depends on when your school submits the tests, not the day you tested. According to College Board's fall 2026 in-school score release schedule:
| School submits tests by | Scores available to students |
|---|---|
| October 9, 2026 | October 22, 2026 |
| October 23, 2026 | November 5, 2026 |
| October 30, 2026 | November 12, 2026 |
So the answer to "when do PSAT scores come out in 2026?" is October 22, November 5, or November 12, depending on your school. Ask your counselor which deadline your school used.
U.S. students age 13 and older who gave a mobile number on test day get a text when scores are ready in the BigFuture School app. You can also sign in to your College Board student account, or ask your counselor for your score report.
How Your PSAT Score Connects to the Digital SAT
The PSAT/NMSQT and SAT share a common score scale. College Board explains that a 500 in PSAT Math represents the same achievement as a 500 in SAT Math taken on the same day, so moving from 500 on the PSAT to 550 on the SAT means 50 points of growth.
It doesn't mean you'll score the same on both. Use your PSAT to identify skills to review, set a realistic SAT target, choose a test date, and decide whether independent study, a course or tutoring fits best.
If you're a junior, upcoming SAT dates include November 7, 2026 (register by October 23) and December 5, 2026 (register by November 20), per College Board's SAT dates and deadlines.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is a good PSAT score for a 10th grader?
A score that meets both grade-10 benchmarks (430 Reading and Writing, 480 Math) is on track. Around 1050 puts a sophomore at roughly the 75th percentile nationally, and 1170 or higher is in the top 10%, according to College Board's percentile tables.
What is a good PSAT score for an 11th grader?
For juniors, about 960 is the national middle and 1200 is about the 90th percentile nationally. For National Merit, the Selection Index and your state's cutoff matter more than the total score.
What is the average PSAT score?
It depends on grade and comparison group. In College Board's nationally representative percentiles, the middle score (50th percentile) is about 920 for 10th graders and about 960 for 11th graders. Your own score report also shows the average score of recent testers.
Can students retake the PSAT/NMSQT?
Each student can get only one valid PSAT/NMSQT score per testing window. Sophomores can take it again as juniors, the year that counts for National Merit.
Conclusion
So, what is a good PSAT score? Meeting your grade's benchmarks means you're on track, and 1200 is a strong score in either grade.
